Obituary

George W. Seaman, 85, of Arcola, passed away at 2:15 PM Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N.Locust Street, Arcola, with Rev. Phil Nevius officiating. Burial will follow in the Arcola Cemetery with military rites accorded. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the funeral home.

Major George W. Seaman USMC Ret. was born November 11, 1927 in Galton, IL, the son of Vernon and Gladys Smith Seaman. He married Anna Pearle Thompson on May 21, 1950; she survives.

Besides his wife, Anna, he is survived by five daughters and two sons: Brenda (Larry) Miller of Galesburg; Gwen M. Seaman of Champaign; George E. Seaman of Arcola; Kent Seaman of Lexington, KY; Jan (Peter) Stortz of Palmer, AK; Jantha (Edward) Hill of Maui, Hawaii; and Betty Ann Karratti of Kaneohe, Hawaii; eight granddaughters; four grandsons; and eight great grandchildren from his marriage with Anna Thompson, as well as seven grandchildren from his first marriage. Also surviving is his sister, Marylou (John) Gillis of Farmer City. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; sister, Margie Riley of Tuscola; brother, Vernon Seaman of Connecticut; and his daughter, Sandra Grabowski of Carbondale.

George graduated from Arcola High School, 1945, and joined the Marines on June 14, 1945 as a private. He completed boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina on the last day of World War II. He was offered an officer's commission in 1953. He served in Hawaii, Illinois, Quantico, Okinawa, Japan, North and South Carolina, and New York. He retired after 20 years as a Major, August 31, 1965, and settled in Decatur, IL. He worked and lived in Decatur for seven years before returning to the Arcola Seaman Family homestead in 1972. He worked for the State of Illinois as a Bank Examiner for 21 years and retired in 1987.

George was a member of the Arcola First Christian Church, serving as treasurer, deacon, and trustee. He also served on the Arcola Library Board as secretary. He was a member of Military Officers Association of America, serving in various officer positions in local chapters and secretary in the state organization for four years.

George had strong family roots in the Arcola community and will be missed by many. Memorials may be made to the Arcola First Christian Church Memorial Fund or Arcola Public Library.
