Wilfred G. "Bill" Laley, 86, of Tuscola, IL, passed away at 1:54 p.m., Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center, Urbana, IL.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, February 12, 2018 at the Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, 201 East Van Allen Street, Tuscola, IL with Father Angel Sierra. Burial with military rites accorded will follow in the Tuscola Township Cemetery, Tuscola, IL.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. with a 4 p.m. prayer service on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main Street, Tuscola, IL.
Bill was born January 31, 1932 in rural Philo, IL, the son of Rudolph and Florence (Decker) Laley. He married Shirley A. Zane April 12, 1958 in Tuscola, IL. She preceded him in death on August 21, 2006.
He is survived by 3 sons: Steven (Laurie) Laley of Spring, TX, Robert (Susan) Laley of Mahomet, and Richard (Sue) Laley of Tuscola, daughter: Patricia (Duncan) McHugh of Roscoe, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren with 3 additional great-grand babies soon to arrive, 4 sisters: Ruth Buck of Armstrong, twin sister: Wilma McClain of Philo, Eloise Kennedy of Tuscola, and Betty Biggs of Columbus, OH, sister-in-law: Joannie Jacobs of Rardin.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers: Joe Laley and Carl Laley.
Bill was passionate about his carpentry all his life. He retired from Cabot Corporation, where he worked as a maintenance technician. He proudly served his country as a member of the United State Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Bill was a member of Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Tuscola American Legion Post # 27, and Bill and Shirley were founding members of the Tuscola POW WOW's. They enjoyed volunteering with the Peace Meal program, and he enjoyed sharing lunches and cards with the coffee crowd at the Senior Center also. He was a TCHS, Fighting Illini, and St. Louis Cardinal fan.
Bill never hesitated to pickup a hammer to help someone with a project, whether it was at parks, playgrounds, local school or at FMCC. Bill and Shirley were most proud of their grandchildren's accomplishments, whether it was from sports, music and theater, military, or to their personal achievements. He was a wealth of knowledge about his family's history, and he rarely missed an opportunity for any reunion.
Memorials are suggested to the Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, Tuscola Peace Meal Program, Tuscola POW WOW'S or Donor's Choice.
