S.C. (Sammy) Mahannah, age 79, of Hammond, IL, entered the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early hours of January 8, 2025, after a 5-year battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood, IL. Burial will follow in the Hammond Cemetery with military graveside rites accorded for the US Air Force Veteran.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Sam was born in Monticello, Illinois, on November 14, 1945, to the late Dean and Catherine (McCoy) Mahannah. Sam lived in Hammond, Illinois, most of his life, graduating from Atwood-Hammond High School in 1963.  During his school years, Sam was an active member of the FFA and showed cattle.

Sam served his country proudly, enlisting in the United States Air Force in January 1966 and receiving an Honorable Discharge in May 1969 after serving in Vietnam. After he returned home, Sam went to work for the B&O Railroad (later CSX), fulfilling a childhood dream of working on the trains that passed through Hammond on a daily basis. Sam retired from CSX in 2005 after 35 years. During his retirement, Sam enjoyed traveling to toy farm equipment shows, draft horse auctions, and bluegrass festivals.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Tyler Rose, and many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna (Jim) Adams of Avon, IN, granddaughter, Melodie (Andrew) Ondecker and great-grandsons, Lucas and Logan Ondecker, of Brownsburg, IN.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make donations to the Hammond United Methodist Church or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
