Ruth Lois Campbell Holaday, age 91, passed away peacefully Thursday March 3, 2016, at Carle Hospital with family at her side. Ruth was born February 11, 1925 in Chesterville Illinois to Charles Woodrow and Ursula (Hendrickson) Campbell. She married Robert Holaday on November 24, 1944, in San Bernardino, California where Bob was stationed during WWII. In 1947, they made their home in rural Arcola.
Ruth is survived by her husband and their three children: Stephen Holaday and wife Patty, Arcola; Barbara Coffey and husband John of Bloomington; and Cheryl Hilgenberg and husband Mike of Arthur. She leaves eight grandchildren: Gregg Hilgenberg, Kara (Hilgenberg) Kuhns, Chad Coffey, Emily (Coffey) McLeod, Christopher Coffey, Clinton Holaday, Tara Holaday, and Matthew Holaday. She is also survived by five great grandchildren, and a sister Maxine David of Decatur. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and five sisters.
Ruth graduated from Arcola High School in 1942. Her primary vocation was homemaker for her husband and three children. She enjoyed being school room mother, 4-H leader, and assisting with Bible school. She also enjoyed cooking and sewing for her family, gardening, shopping, and going to the lake house. Ruth was a member of the Arcola chapter of Eastern Star and advanced to serve as worthy matron. She was an active member of the Arcola Methodist Church for many years which included being a member of the church choir, Methodist Women, and serving as church secretary for several years. She also worked at the Douglas County Soil and Water Conservation office for 16 years. Most of all, however, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The funeral service honoring her life will be held at 12:00 PM Monday March 7, 2016 at the Arcola United Methodist Church with Rev. Vince Rohn officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service.Graveside services will be held at 1:30 PM at the Arcola Cemetery. The family is being assisted by Shrader Funeral Home. The family would like to say a special thank you to the caring staff at Arcola Carriage Crossing.
