Rosemary Clara (VanGundy) "Rodie" King, 90, of Arcola, passed away at Carriage Crossing in Arcola on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 9:37 a.m., surrounded by her children and caregivers at Carriage Crossing.
Per her wishes, the Rite of Cremation will be performed. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Arcola United Methodist Church with Rev. Vince Rohn officiating. Shrader Funeral Home, Arcola, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Rodie was born October 30, 1925 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the first of three children of Clarence W. VanGundy, Sr. and Alma Marie Dannenmueller VanGundy. She married John Barlow King on November 29, 1947 at the Arcola United Methodist Church; he preceded her in death on August 24, 2006. .
Survivors include her daughters, Nancie Jo King Mertz and husband Ronald of Chicago; Jan Ann King and husband David Haddock of Philo; son, John VanGundy King of Los Angeles, California; sister, Barbara Ann VanGundy Wills and husband P.J. "Joe" of Tuscola; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, C.W. VanGundy, Jr. "J.R." and sister-in-law, Betty Ann VanGundy, and her parents.
Her early years were spent in Decatur and Macon. Rodie graduated from Arcola High School in 1943 and graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri in 1945. She went on to teach from 1945-1947 at Stephens' preschool and at Warrenton Jr. High in Pensacola, Florida while her husband served in the US Navy. After he finished his military service, they returned to Arcola where they raised their family.
Family and fun were of primary importance to Rodie throughout her life. She was an exceptional mother, housekeeper, friend, volunteer, and avid golfer. She and her husband, as well as her parents were Charter, Lifelong member of Kaskaskia Country Club. In later years, they traveled extensively and had homes in Palm Valley, California, and Champaign. Upon John's death, she returned to Arcola.
Rodie was the second resident at Carriage Crossing in Arcola. The kindness, love, and compassionate care she received from their entire staff was an amazing blessing to Rodie and her children.
