Robert W. Holaday, age 92, passed away peacefully at 6:50 p.m.on Monday, June 12, 2017 at the Arthur Nursing Home. He was born on May 25, 1925 in Arcola to Robert Homer and Cora Kanitz Holaday. Bob married Ruth Campbell on November 24, 1944 in San Bernardino, California where he was stationed during WWII. In 1947, they made their home in rural Arcola where he began farming until retiring in 1989.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Arcola United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeff Van Dyke officiating. Burial will follow in the Arcola Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by the Arcola VFW #7868 and American Legion Post #639. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N. Locust Street, Arcola.
Bob is survived by his three children: Stephen Holaday and wife, Patty, of Arcola; Cheryl Hilgenberg and husband, Mike, of Arthur; and Barbara Coffey and husband, John, of Bloomington. He leaves eight grandchildren: Gregg Hilgenberg, Kara (Hilgenberg) Kuhns, Chad Coffey, Emily (Coffey) McLeod, Christopher Coffey, Clinton Holaday, Tara Holaday, and Matthew Holaday. He is also survived by six great grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Juanita Roberts.
Bob graduated from Arcola High School in 1943. He joined the Army Air Corp after graduation and was stationed in San Bernardino, California, then in West Palm Beach, Florida for the duration of WWII.
He served on the Arcola School Board for several years and was an active member of the Arcola United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Senior Choir; served as president of the Methodist Men; and served on the Trustee and Outreach Committees for many years. Bob also was very active with the Masonic Lodge; Arcola Lions Club; was a director on the Arcola Coop Grain Board; was a volunteer for Arcola Telecare; and served with the Eastern Star as Worthy Patron.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bob loved his music and especially enjoyed listening to the big band sounds of the 40's . In addition he enjoyed leisure time boating at his lake house with family.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the caring staff at the Arthur Home.
Memorials in Bob's honor may be made to the Arcola United Methodist Church or the Arthur Home.
