Obituary

Richard E. "Dick" Hein, 80, of Arthur, passed away at 11:22 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2025 at Carle Hospital surrounded by his family.

Dick was born November 21, 1944 in Peoria the son of Edward C. and Estella M. Hein, and following many moves from Syracuse, New York; to Rochelle, Illinois; to Arcola; and finally to Arthur in 1959, where he has called home for 66 years.

Dick graduated from Arthur High School Class of 1963 and then joined the U.S. Marine Corp from 1963-1967, serving in Vietnam.  He was united in marriage to Barbara Hein on November 16, 1969, celebrating over 55 years.

After discharge from the U.S. Marine Corp, he worked at the Old Heidelberg Steak House for 10 years.  He then went to work for the State of Illinois as District Bridge and Maintenance Inspector for 25 years.  After retirement he worked for Steve Honn part-time driving trucks and equipment. He also was a volunteer fireman and ambulance attendant.

For many years Dick gave his service to the community in many ways: Arthur Fire and Rescue and Ambulance Service; Arthur and Douglas County 911 & ESDA; Douglas County Board; Arthur Park Board; Bourbon & Lowe Cemetery Board; Bourbon Twp Board; Douglas and Moultrie County Fire Association Board; Moultrie County Dive Team Board; Arthur Boy Scouts, and Cub Scouts. He had been a Red Cross Blood Bank Donor having donated 27 gallons.

Dick was a member of the Arthur American Legion/VFW,  U.S. Marine Corp Reserve Legion of Champaign, Okaw Fireman's Association, and Kaskaskia Country Club.

Dick is survived by his wife, Barbara Hein of Arthur; brother, Ed Hein (Sonika Hamdan) of Springfield; aunt and cousins; special friends, Steve Honn Family.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2025 at the Arthur United Methodist Church, 128 E. Illinois Street, Arthur, with Pastor Jill Bunker officiating. Burial will follow in the Arcola Cemetery with Burial Rites by Deacon Jeff Beals. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at the Arthur United Methodist Church.  Shrader Funeral Home, Arthur, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Arthur Fire Dept. and EMT Association.
