Ralph E. "Gene" Williams, 86, of Mattoon, IL, formerly of Tuscola, IL, passed away at 9:38 am, Thursday, August 18, 2011 at his residence.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, August 22, 2011 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main Street, Tuscola, IL with Rev. Tim Barber officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm, with public Masonic Services to be held at 7:00 pm at the funeral home on Sunday, August 21, 2011.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday at the Alma Cemetery, Alma, IL with military graveside rites accorded.
Gene was born on October 21, 1924 in Alma, IL, the son of Alva and Lela Clow Williams. He married Margaret Milam Willoughby on September 28, 1974 in Tuscola, IL. She survives.
Other survivors include his daughters: Cheryl (Robert) Cobb and Debbie (John) Grooms both of Sullivan, IL, step-sons: David Willoughby of Roy, UT, Richard (Rita) Willoughby of Tuscola, IL, Dennis Willoughby of Pesotum, IL, and Jon (Bonnadelle) Willoughby of Mattoon, IL. Grandchildren: Randy Cobb, Jason (Shannon) Cobb, Ryan (Kandi) Cobb, Brittany Cobb, Bethany Cobb, Kristen (Brad) Hubble, Nick (Heidi) Grooms and Tyson (Kasey) Grooms, 9 great-grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren, brother: Loris (Nancy) Williams of Tampa, FL, sisters: Betty Brubaker of Crown Pointe, IN and Elnora (Donald) Cheatum of Fairfield Glade, TN
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 step-grandchildren, 1 step-great-grandson, 4 brothers: Earl, Paul, Dewayne and Bobby Dan and a sister: Mary Elizabeth
Gene retired in 1986 after working as the city superintendent for the City of Tuscola for 13 years. He had previously worked for the City of Kinmundy for 16 years and for the City of Sullivan, IL for 5 years.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Champaign and the Tuscola Masonic Lodge #332, AF & AM.
Gene served his country as a member of the US Army during World War II.
