Millard "Gabe" Goben, 80, of Arcola, IL, passed away at 7:28 a.m., on Friday, October 12, 2012 with family at his side.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 205 South Locust St., Arcola, IL. Father Barry Harmon will officiate. Burial will be held immediately following the funeral in the Arcola Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church. The Shrader Funeral Home, Arcola, IL is handling the arrangements.
Gabe was born March 7, 1932 in Bloomington, Illinois, the son of Millard and Thelma Goben. He married Bernadette Marie Tracy on June11,1955 inPhiladelphia,PA;she preceded him in death. Gabe was a member of the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. After his time in the service, he attended Illinois State University and received a graduate degree in education. Gabe spent the next several years teaching and coaching in small communities in New Jersey, Indiana and Illinois. He and Bernadette eventually settled in Arcola, where they raised their four children and he spent the rest of his career as a school administrator.
Gabe was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Arcola, where he served as maintenance supervisor for several years following his retirement. Most recently, Gabe volunteered as job foreman for Nacke Construction in Arcola. He enjoyed boating, golfing, fishing, and reading, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. He was also a founding member of Arcola's World Famous Lawn Rangers.
Surviving are his daughters, Peg (Kent) Douglas of Hindsboro; Sue (William) Walsh of Naperville; Jayne (Kevin) Tyrrell of Alexis; and his son Matthew Goben of Webster Groves, Mo. Gabe is also survived by his brother Richard Goben of Paxton; his grandchildren, Kris (Steve) Hermansson; Amy (Kurt) Leifheit; Sarah (Cory) Watkins; Meghan and Bridget Perkins; Riley and Nicholas Tyrrell; Connor and Ryan Walsh; Emily, Hannah, and Caroline Goben; and his great-grandchildren, Erik and Eva Hermansson and Austin Watkins.
He was preceded in death by his wife and two infant sons.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his honor may be given to the Arcola Public Library or St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Arcola.
