Marjorie Ellen (Barcus) Jones, 74, of Pierson, IL, passed away at 6:55 a.m., Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Arthur Home after a long fight with cancer.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 13 2014 at the United Church of Atwood, Atwood, IL, with Rev. Mike Drake officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, January 12, 2014 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood, IL. Burial will be in the Mackville Cemetery, Atwood, IL
Marjorie was born January 25, 1939 in rural Hammond Illinois. She was the second of 7 children born to Raymond and Mary Barcus. Marjorie attended Atwood-Hammond High School graduating in 1957. She attended Illinois State University in Normal, IL, graduating with a degree in education in 1961. She married Arnold Jones, of Pierson Station IL, in March 25,1961. They lived in Arthur Illinois for a short time where she began her teaching career. In 1961 she and her husband moved to Pierson Station. Marjorie taught school in the Arthur and Atwood-Hammond school districts for 34 years. She taught many different grades over her years but her favorite was kindergarten, which she taught until her retirement in 1994. During her tenure she touched the lives of countless children, many of whom still harbor fond memories of Mrs Jones. After her retirement from teaching Marjorie maintained an active social life.
She was a member of Atwood United Church of Christ where she was involved in many church functions over the years. She was a member of the Atwood Women's Club, the Illinois Education Association and the Moultrie-Douglas Retired Teachers Association. She served on the board of the Atwood-Hammond Community Library District for many years. Her favorite times always centered around her family. She enjoyed traveling to trapshoots with her husband, sons, their wives, grandchildren and other friends. She really enjoyed attending water aerobics. She met many special people during swimming and loved having coffee with the gang at McDonalds. Some of her favorite hobbies were piecing quilts and reading. Most of all she loved having her family around the table for meals and her grandchildren for overnight visits.
Marjorie is survived by her husband Arnold of 52 years, their two sons; Tony (his wife Joan) of Sullivan, IL and Terry (his wife Sharon) of Pierson Station, IL. She was the proud grandmother to Cameron Jones, Alex McArthur, Alyssa McArthur, Aaron Jones and Lindsay Jones. Also surviving are her sisters Nellie Eyestone of Urbana, IL, Helen Schindler of Urbana, IL, Barbara Asghar of Atwood, IL. Brothers Robert Barcus of Atwood IL and Samuel Barcus of Newman IL. She was proceeded in death by her parents and brother James Barcus. Marjorie and her family want to say a special thank you to her good friends Glenna Harris and Ginny Osborn, Dr. Debra Jackson, her family physician and Dr. Mario Velasco and all the staff at The Cancer Care Center in Decatur.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the Atwood United Church of Christ or to Cancer Care Specialists of Decatur, IL.
