Obituary

Marguerite McDaniel, 100, of Tuscola, IL passed away at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Tuscola United Methodist Church, 901 North Prairie Street, Tuscola, IL with Rev. Patty Johansen officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday December 20, 2013 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main Street, Tuscola, IL. Burial will be in the Cartwright Cemetery, rural Tuscola, IL.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Tuscola United Methodist Church Building Fund, 901 North Prairie Street, Tuscola, IL 61953 or the East Prairie School Library, 409 South Prairie St. Tuscola, IL 61953.

Mrs. McDaniel was born on September 11, 1913 in Walker, IL, the daughter of Robert Homer and Mayme Walker Andrews. She married John Gilbert McDaniel, son of Thomas Bankson and Anna Powell McDaniel, on May 10, 1941 in New London, MO. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2001.

Mrs. McDaniel leaves three children: John H. McDaniel and wife Ruth Ann of Tuscola, IL; Thomas W. McDaniel and wife Linda of Fishers, IN; and Ann L. Chandler and husband Ray of Taylorville, IL; 4 grandchildren: Mary (Tom) Maas of Fishers, IN; Thomas W. McDaniel Jr. of Fishers, IN; Patricia (Chip) Kimberlin of Normal, IL and Brian (Megan) McDaniel of Laguna Hills, CA; 8 great- grandchildren: Courtney (Gordon) Buhler of Noblesville, IN; Caitlin, Paige, Nathan and Tyler Maas all of Fishers, IN and Caleb, Tyson and Elijah McDaniel all of Laguna Hills, CA. She also leaves one sister, Barbara Jostes of Moweaqua, IL.

She was preceded in death by 3 sisters: Virginia Bohlen, Carolyn Bahr and Dorothy Bohlen.

Marguerite graduated from Macon High School in 1931 as valedictorian of her class. She attended Millikin University on a scholarship for one year. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a major in Elementary Education. She was honored by election to membership in Phi Kappa Phi, national honorary society for education and Kappa Delta Pi, honorary society for educators.

She taught for 9 years in Macon County at Turner and East Stringtown Schools. After moving to Tuscola, she taught for 22 years at South Ward and East Prairie Schools, in the Tuscola Community School District.

Marguerite joined the Tuscola United Methodist Church in 1951. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, University of Illinois Alumni Association, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, Douglas County Retired Teachers and Moultrie/Douglas Extension group. She was a member of the Tuscola Woman's Club, where she was very active in the Bible and Literature division.

Her hobby was flower gardening, especially growing roses. She had many flower beds and cared for them herself through this past fall.

On September 7, 2013, she celebrated her 100th birthday at a party hosted by her 3 children. She greatly enjoyed her family and friends that attended this event at the Tuscola United Methodist Church. She received 156 cards, many from former students.
