Obituary

Margaret Elizabeth Ashwill Hartman, 86, of Tuscola, IL, died at 11:50 p.m., Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL

She was born on November 11, 1924 in Bourbon Township outside of Arthur, IL, the daughter of John J. and Mabel M. Heerdt Ashwill.

She walked 2 miles to attend Parkville country school in first and 2nd grade, attended Maple Grove country school the next 4 years and graduated from the old Tuscola High School on Sale Street in 1943.

She married Charles H. Hartman on June 28, 1969 at the Forty Martyrs Catholic Church in Tuscola, IL. He preceded her in death on July 1, 2010.

Margaret worked as a cashier for Jones' grocery store after graduation. She then moved on to be Secretary for United Propane Company for 15 years, retiring from the Douglas County Treasurer's Office after 8 years of service. She farmed northeast of Tuscola with her husband, Charles, until he retired in 2004. Margaret was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tuscola all of her life. She helped with Sunday School and Bible School when her daughter was younger. She and her sister, Helen, led the Okaw Valley 4-H Club in Douglas County for over 20 years. In later years, both she and her husband were members and volunteers at the Douglas County Museum. She loved to garden, play in her flower beds and collect bells.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynnette Smith (husband Carl) of Beardstown, IL, one sister: Helen (husband Marvin) Shaw of Kingman, IN, 2 sister-in-laws, Bernita Ashwill of Tuscola and Kathleen Ashwill of Hillsboro, IN, 4 step-grandchildren, 8 step-great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and 2 brothers: Lloyd and Elvin Ashwill.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 17, 2011 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 600 East Northline Road, Tuscola, IL, with Rev. Jason Braaten officiating. Visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Tuscola Township Cemetery, Tuscola, IL. Following the service, a meal will be served in the fellowship hall at the church. Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main Street, Tuscola, IL is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Douglas County Museum, BETH's Place or the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Tuscola.
