Loyd Gayle Daugherty, 85, of Arthur, died at 8:15 PM Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012 at Palm Terrace in Mattoon.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 at Shrader Funeral Home, 431 S. Vine Street, Arthur, with Pastor John Stewart officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
Gayle was born January 11, 1927 in Louisville, Illinois, the son of Verlie Raymond and Adie Bernice Eastin Daugherty. He married Mary Frances Burtner in Charleston on Nov. 28, 1948 and they have been married for over 63 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of Arthur; one son, Dr. Dwight "Dike" Daugherty and wife Pamela of Seymour, Missouri; one daughter, Tiana "Ti" Harris and husband Steve of Lake Mattoon; four grandchildren, MSGT Jennifer Daugherty of Peoria; Marc Nease of Affton, Missouri; Megan Nease of Mattoon; Leah Harris of Lake Mattoon; 6 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; two sisters, Phyllis Bible of Louisville, Illinois; Mary Carol Richardson of Hindsboro; and one brother, Verlie "Butch" Daugherty of Hindsboro. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Daugherty, and sister, Sara Katheryn Bunten.
Gayle started out as a bookkeeper for the Tom West Chevrolet Dealership in Lovington. He started Daugherty Chevrolet Dealership in Arthur in the early 50's and bought the Oldsmobile dealership in the 70's. He retired on December 31, 1991 but continued selling used cars with his brothers in Mattoon for many years.
Gayle was a member of the Vine Street Christian Church, Elks Club in Champaign, and Moose Club in Mattoon. For many years, he served on the Village Board of Arthur; was a member of the Arthur Chamber of Commerce; member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary; a member of the Kaskaskia Country Club; and served as a Bourbon election judge for 20 years. Gayle was also a member of the "White Hat Club."
He loved spending time with his grandkids, hosting parties, dancing, especially ballroom, country western dance, and square dancing. He enjoyed fishing, driving, doing yardwork in "gum boots", and "piddling" around the house. His hobby was his work.
During World War II , Gayle served in the occupation force in Japan with the United States Army.
