Lemuel O. Smith, 81, of Atwood, IL, passed away at 3:05 p.m., Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at his residence.
Graveside Services with military rites accorded will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 20, 2013 at the Mackville Cemetery, Atwood, IL, with Father Delix Michel officiating. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the services at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood, IL
Lemuel was born on January 25, 1932 in Buckner, IL, the son of Waltham and Velma Connor Smith. He married LaVerne M. Schick on February 4, 1956 in Christopher, IL. She survives.
Other survivors include his son: Waltham (Barbara) Smith of Arcola, IL, daughter: Jo Ann Chaney of Atwood, IL, grandchildren: Jennifer (Curt) Deel, Elliot Smith and Erica Smith, great-grandchildren: Layla, Mariah and Markus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and sister: Leota Grayhem.
Memorials are suggested to the Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, James Reeder American Legion Post or to the Donor's Choice.
Lemuel retired in 1994 from Quantum-USI Chemical Company in Tuscola, IL, where he worked as a chemical operator for 37 years. He was a US Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, James Reeder American Legion Post #770 and the Rock Springs Dulcimer Group.
Lemuel was a former committee member of the Atwood Boy Scout Troop and helped with the Atwood Little League. He enjoyed Blue Grass Music and played many instruments including the guitar, mandolin, dulcimer and ukulele. Lemuel enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, camping at the lake and spending time with his children, grandchildren and many friends.
