Obituary

Lela G. Heinz, 95, of Pesotum, IL, passed away at 8:20 p.m., Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at the Tuscola Health Care Center, Tuscola, IL.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 26, 2015 at the Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta, IL. No visitation will be held. Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, Tuscola, IL is handling the arrangements.

Lela was born December 10th, 1920, the third child of Roy Mercer & Sadie Dowers Mercer.

She attended Hammond, IL schools until she joined her cousin Goldie in New York City, where she graduated from Walton High School, Bronx, New York in 1940. Her graduating class commencement was held at the Radio City Music Hall.

On July 12th, 1941 she became Mrs. Gilbert Waldo Heinz. They would have 3 children: Richard Dean, Cynthia Sue and Jerry Lynn.

Survivors include: daughter: Sue Byers of Harristown, IL, son: Jerry (Deb) Heinz of Tolono, IL, daughter-in-law: Gail Heinz of Tuscola, IL, brother-in-law: Harold (Jean) Heinz of Findlay, sister-in-law: Elinor Heinz- grandchildren: Lisa (Jay) Moraski of Pesotum, Brad Heinz of Maryville, Barb (John) Tate of Kenny, Rob (Dana) Byers of Decatur, Becky (Patrick) Garrett of Decatur, Drew Heinz of Pesotum, and Allison Heinz of Tolono, 10 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Lela is preceded in death by her late husband of 73 years: Gilbert, son, Richard Dean Heinz, brother, Wayne Noble Mercer, sister: Wilma Goodrich Kropp and half- sister: Elva Mae Luly.

Lela was the backbone of a busy farm family. She spent many years during harvest hauling grain to the elevator. She was a wonderful cook who made sure no one ever left her home hungry. She was a lover of horses, chickens & dogs- all animals really. Lela was a breeder of many litters of Samoyed puppies. A landlord to many over the years as she & Gilbert renovated rental properties in the Decatur area. Lela's soft & gentle heart and her generosity made her a very special person. Throughout her life, nothing else really mattered to Lela other than her family and friends. Lela fought a courageous battle most of her life with Bipolar Illness. For the last 10 years Lela was cared for by the wonderful staff at Tuscola Health Care Facility. They became her extended family which increased her quality of life.

Lela was a member of the Eagle Mountain Assembly of God Church, Tuscola, IL.

The family request any memorials be for the employee appreciation fund at Tuscola Health Care Center.
