Obituary
Dr. John R. Waltrip, 87, of Peoria, Arizona, formerly of Mattoon, retired President of Glendale Community College passed away Monday, June 10, 2013 at 9:00 PM.
Dr. Waltrip was born September 24, 1925 on the family farm west of Mattoon. He attended grade school and high school in Mattoon as well.
It was his privilege to have seen Naval service in both World War II and the Korean War.
It was while completing his college days at the University of Missouri that he met his wife to be, Mary Ann Wilhelm. They chose the Phoenix area to be their home.
Dr. Waltrip became a member of the faculty of Glendale College as a professor of History in 1964. He assumed the position of President in 1975, retiring in 2002.
The last years of his life were spent in traveling the world and as an active member of the Glendale Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Ann, of Peoria, Arizona; his brother and sister-in-law, William and Traute Waltrip; and niece, Kathleen Waltrip of Carpinteria, California.
Burial will be in the Humboldt Cemetery. It was Dr. Waltrip's request that no services be held. Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N. Locust Street, Arcola, is assisting the family with arrangements.
