John Vernon Rohrer, 91, of Arthur, died at 11:16 AM Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Vine Street Christian Church, 249 S. Vine Street, Arthur, with Rev. Rick Williams officiating. Masonic Services will be conducted just prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow at the Arthur Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Arthur American Legion Post #479. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until time of service at the church. Shrader Funeral Home, 431 S. Vine Street, Arthur, is in charge of services.

John Vernon was born March 14, 1919 in Rutland, the son of John and Rachel Sunken Rohrer. He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Fitzjarrald on August 2, 1942 and she preceded him in death on October 20, 1994. He then married Naomi Webb Brown in Honolulu, Hawaii, on November 10, 1999 and she survives.

Besides his wife, Naomi Rohrer, he is survived by one son, Jeff Rohrer and wife Joyce of Montgomery, Indiana; three grandchildren, Mark, Matthew, and Melody Rohrer all of Montgomery, Indiana; and stepdaughter, Brenda Llanas of Greeley, Colorado.

John Vernon graduated from Eureka High School in 1936 and Eureka College in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He was a civilian instructor at Scott Air Force Base just before the outbreak of World War II. After enlisting in the Army, he was encouraged to attend Officer Candidate School and did so at Yale University. His expertise was Radio Range Communicator and was serving in Guam at the end of the war. He retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel after serving in the Air Force Reserves for 25 years.

Upon returning from the war, John Vernon worked at the Factory Sales in Arthur fom 1946-1968. He worked briefly for Eureka Williams in Bloomington prior to opening John Vernon's Hardware Store in Arthur, owning and operating it from 1969-1979.

John Vernon was a member of the Arthur Vine Street Christian Church; a member of the Arthur American Legion Post #479; 50-year member of the Arthur Masonic Lodge and a 32 Degree Mason at the Bloomington Consistory.
