Obituary

James Robert "Bob" Gibson, Sr., 95, of Hammond, passed away at 5:35 a.m. on August 24, 2018 at the Arthur Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 27, 2018 at Shrader Funeral Home, 431 S. Vine Street, Arthur, with Rev. Jim Allison officiating. Burial will follow in the Hammond Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.

Bob was born October 20, 1922 in Hammond the son of John William and Effie Mae Bandy Gibson. He met the love of his life, Alta Fern Roberts, in Arthur. They were married on Feb. 17, 1942 in Palmyra, Missouri and celebrated 72 years of marriage. Alta preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 2016.

Survivors include his son, James R. Gibson, Jr. of Hammond; sister, Betty Jane Day of Hammond; and his two pets, Sylvester and Precious, who were always by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, five sisters, and his wonderful mother-in-law, Iva Roberts of Arthur.

Bob attended Atwood-Hammond Schools and received his GED from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Bob's life led him in many directions in his career. During WWII he worked for Progress Industries in Arthur, and Caterpillar in Mattoon and Decatur. He would later work for the Village of Hammond taking care of the Water Plant, was village police officer, bus driver, and later owned Gibson's Standard Service. Bob also worked for Long's Chevrolet in Hammond for several years. In 1952 he started his career with Borg Warner Corporation Marvel Schebler Division as a machinist. Bob would later work for the IMPAC Nuclear Division of Borg Warner as the head inspector for control rods of nuclear submarines. After its closure, he returned to Marvel Schebler and retired at the York Division after 32 years. Bob also served for several years as a board member for the Marvel Schebler Credit Union. He was affiliated with the Hammond United Methodist Church and was a former trustee for the Hammond Cemetery.

After his retirement, he ran his lawn mower service for several years. Bob was always there to help anyone who needed something done.

Memorials are suggested the Hammond United Methodist Church or Humane Society.
