Imogene (Ghere) Thompson, 90, of Arcola, died at 10:25 PM Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Gowin Parc in Mattoon.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the Arcola First Christian Church, 311 E. Main Street, with Rev. Brent Budd officiating. Burial will follow in the Arcola Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday at Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N. Locust Street, Arcola.
Imogene was born July 3, 1924 in Martinsville, the daughter of Orville and Cora Garver Bright. She married Bobby Ghere in 1943 and he was killed in World War II. She later married Lowell Thompson in 1949; he preceded her in death on July 16, 1975.
Survivors include one son, Dan (Anne) Ghere of Springfield; daughter, Cinda (Mike) Berry of Arcola; 6 grandchildren, Gina (Ghere) Lair, Robert (Bob) Ghere, Kurt Boyer, Matt Boyer, Jami (Jones) Budd, and Chris Jones; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; brother, Bobby (Dorothy) Bright of Arcola; and sister-in-law, Frances Thompson of Arcola. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Bonnie Boyer; 2 sisters, Frieda Wood and Evelyn Thompson.
Imogene graduated from the Arcola High School Class of 1942. She worked for over 30 years at the Arcola Elementary and High School offices. For many years, even after retirement, she sold tickets at the basketball and football games. She developed life-long friendships and was a great fan of all Arcola sports. Over the years she became known not only to Arcola fans but to visiting fans, coaches, administrators, and officials. Imogene received the Arcola Alumni Award in 2013. After retirement, she also spent many years traveling the world.
She was an active member of the Arcola First Christian Church which she had attended since age 5 and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. Imogene was a volunteer for Arcola Telecare and the Senior Advisory Board.
Her porch was a favorite of all the grandchildren where they spent time with Grandma T. She was Broomcorn Festival Grand Marshall in 1986. She loved to line dance and is fondly remembered for the many dances held in her garage and also belonged to a line-dancing club that performed at many churches and nursing homes.
