Hortense M. Biggs, 101, of Arcola, IL, passed away at 3:45 a.m., Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Care Center, Mattoon, IL

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 16, 2017 at the Arcola Cemetery with Pastor Steven Stern officiating. No Visitation will be held. Shrader Funeral Home, 204 North Locust Street, Arcola, IL is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Mrs. Biggs was born on September 26, 1916 in Hindsboro, IL, the daughter of Walter P. and Rose Mae Ramsey Shields. She married William H. "Bill" Biggs on August 29, 1937 in Rockville, IN. He preceded her in death on January 31, 1998.

Survivors include her children: Brenda Lindenmeyer of Arcola, Rick (Susie) Biggs of Savoy, Billie Kay Biggs of Terre Haute, IN and Nancy Travis of Tuscola, 18 grandchildren, 57, great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren, sister: Shirley Jackson of Champaign and brother: Terry Shields of Kemp.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter: Bobbie Sue Cazalet, 3 brothers, 1 sister and an infant sister.

Memorials are suggested to the Mattoon Health Care & Rehab Center.

Mrs. Biggs was homemaker and former one-room school teacher. She was a graduate of Eastern Illinois Teacher's College, Charleston, IL. She was a member of the DAR and published several books on genealogy. Mrs. Biggs was a member of the Arcola United Methodist Church.
