Harold F. Maris, 88, of Charleston, IL, passed away at 6:03 pm, Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home, Mattoon, IL.

He was born on October 8, 1921 in Tuscola, IL. Harold was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston, a life member of the American Legion, and a member of many other professional and service organizations. He was a WWII veteran with service in the US Navy as a medical corpsman. Mr. Maris was a 1947 graduate of Eastern Illinois University and President of his senior class at EIU. He served as the Principal of Rochelle Twp High School in Rochelle, IL for many years, and retired in 1984 after a full and rewarding career in education. Harold and his wife, Marjorie, retired in Kerrville, Texas where they enjoyed golfing and membership in the Elks, the German Dance Club, and the American Legion. Mr. Maris was a James E. West Fellowship supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Maris was born on October 8, 1921 in Tuscola, IL, the son of Robert and Beulah Campbell Maris. He married Marjorie Beermann on June 6, 1947 in Champaign, IL. She preceded him in death on January 19, 2000.

Survivors include a sister, Donna Nonamaker of Tuscola, IL, a daughter, Charlaine L. Maris of Muncie, IN, a son, Charles R. Maris, MD and daughter-in-law, Karen L. Maris of Charleston, IL. Mr. Maris was the loving grandfather of Katherine (Michael) Pyle of Deerfield, IL, Emily J. Maris of Chicago, IL and Charles R. (Melissa) Maris, Jr. of Davenport, FL. Mr. Maris was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 2206 South 4th Street, Charleston, IL, with the Rev. Walter Carlson officiating.

Graveside Services with military rites will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at the Tuscola Township Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in remembrance of Mr. Maris to the Trust Fund of the Lincoln Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, 262 West Prairie Avenue, Decatur, IL 62523
