Harland "Hop" Conner, 92, of Tuscola, IL, went to be with his Heavenly Father at 9:21 a.m. ,Sunday, July 7, 2013 at his residence.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2013 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main St., Tuscola, IL. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Arcola Cemetery Arcola, IL with military graveside rites accorded.
Hop was born June 14, 1921 in Hindsboro, IL, the son of Charles and Stella Fern Bush Conner. Hop was the middle child of 13.
After graduating from Hindsboro High School in Hindsboro, IL Hop went to work in construction in Tuscola. Later he worked for Eastern Water Company for 13 years and CIPS for 20 years and lastly he worked at the Tuscola IGA. On December 27, 1949 he married the love of his life, Nancy Bloxam, they had 5 children. She preceded him in death July 13, 2012.
He volunteered his time with Tuscola Little League, Boy Scouts and was a league bowler for 35 years. Hop was active in the Lion's Club, Elks, Moose Lodge, Amvet's, American Legion and was a member of the VFW. Hop served in the National Guard from 1941 to 1943 then in the Marine Corp for 3 years. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was in the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1948 Hop took it upon himself to have the American Flag saluted at every Tuscola home football game. Hop has been an active member of the First Baptist Church of Tuscola for at least 62 years where he held many positions working and honoring our Lord and savior. His love for his Country, home town, family and church has been an inspiration to all.
Hop is survived by his son: Jim (Laura) Conner of Fernandina Beach, FL; daughter: Diana Risley of Tuscola; son: Steve (Fay) Conner of Paragould, AR; daughter: Donna (Rocky) Warner of Atwood, IL; son: Ernie (Christine) Conner of Henrietta, TX and daughter-in-law: Marion Conner. Brother: Carl Conner of Ft. Myers, FL; 12 grandchildren: Dottie, Amy, Steve, Jr., Jamie, David, James "Red" Jim, Jr., Anthony, Alan, Becki, Brandy, Kathryn,; 23 great-grandchildren: Ashley, Austin, Alexis, Zack, Drew, Kodi, Lexis, Brandi, Kenzi, Kayli, Maddie, Aidan, Riley Jo, Kara, Kyleigh, Mason, Kamryn, Wyatt, Camryn, Brooklynn Gabe, Alexis and Blake; a great-great-grandson: Keamon.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Nancy, parents, brothers: Fred, Emmett, Edgar, Harry, Ray and Clarence; sisters: Silvia, Gertie, Blanche, Minnie and Lola Mary, 2 precious grandbabies: his name sake: James Harland Conner and Kimberly Conner and the light of his life granddaughter Tammy Lewis.
