Obituary

Harlan W. Henderson, 91, of Tuscola, IL, passed away at 3:35 a.m., Monday, June 18, 2012 at the Tuscola Health Care Center, Tuscola, IL

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 22, 2012 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main Street, Tuscola, IL, with Rev. Kenneth Roedder officiating. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial with military graveside services will be in the Tuscola Township Cemetery.

Harlan was born on August 18, 1920 in Greenup, IL, to Joel M. and Grace Lacey Henderson. He married Dolores I. Barnes on February 21, 1943 in Dalton City, IL. She survives.

He also leaves behind his son: Roger (Janice) Henderson and grandson: Kyle all of Jacksonville, IL, sister: Marilyn Parker of Columbia, MO and a brother: Dale Henderson of Camargo, IL.

Harlan grew up in the Hammond – Lovington area.
He attended Lovington High School, where he was active in all sports.
In 1940, his family moved to the Camargo area, where he farmed
for his dad.
In July 1945, he joined the US Army and was stationed at Camp
Joseph T. Robinson in Little Rock, AR.
In 1949, he became an auctioneer, from which he retired after 50 years. He served as state secretary of the Illinois Auctioneer Association for 8 years. He also served at this job for the Douglas County 4-H Club for some 20 years. He raised pure breed Chester White hogs and enjoyed showing at summer fairs along with his son. Some of the organizations included, Tuscola Cooperative Grain Board, Villa Grove Lions Club, former president of the Tuscola Rotary Club, past commander of the American Legion Post #27, honorary chapter farmer from the Tuscola FFA. He was the 4-H club leader to the 36 Flyers and Camargo Champs.

He later obtained his Broker's Real Estate license and worked at the Hillard Agency. After working there, he started his own real estate office. During this time he became the Douglas County Supervisor of Assessments for 4 years. Always interested in politics, he served as vice chairman of the Douglas County Republican party for many years.

He and Dolores took ballroom dancing lessons and were hooked. They had dances at the community building for 10 years. They had the opportunity to join several dance clubs and have met and enjoyed many friends. Being a likeable and straight forward man to those who knew him, he will be greatly missed by his family and a host of people whom he served.

Memorials are suggested to the Harbor Light Hospice or the American Legion Post #27.
