Gilbert W. Heinz, 95, of Pesotum, IL, passed away at 1:40 a.m., Friday, February 20, 2015 at the Tuscola Health care Center, Tuscola, IL.
Graveside Services with military rites will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2015 at the Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta, IL. No visitation will be held. Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, Tuscola, IL is handling the arrangements.
Gilbert was born September 4th, 1919, the second son of Emerson W. Heinz and Stella Irene McCarty.
He attended Bethel School northeast of Argenta and Argenta High School until 1938. He was active in track, holding several track records and playing on several winning baseball and basketball teams while there. This led to his lifelong love of Illinois basketball and Cubs baseball.
He married Lela Garland Mercer on July 12th, 1941. Soon after the birth of their first son, Richard, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps. This service took him to Belgium then onto England, France, Germany and Italy where he drove transport trucks delivering weapons.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years: Lela, son: Jerry (Deb) Heinz of Tolono, IL, daughter: Sue Byers of Harristown, IL, daughter-in-law: Gail Heinz of Tuscola, IL, brother: Harold (Jean) Heinz of Findlay, IL, sister-in laws: Wilma Kropp of Arthur, IL and Elinor Heinz of Maroa, IL, grandchildren: Lisa (Jay) Moraski of Pesotum, Brad Heinz of Maryville, Barb (John) Tate of Kenny, Rob (Dana) Byers of Decatur, Becky (Patrick) Garrett of Decatur, Drew Heinz of Pesotum, and Allison Heinz of Tolono, 10 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son: Richard Dean Heinz, brothers: Elwood, Forrest and Max, sisters: Avis and Doris.
After returning home from the war he started his long career of farming. First in Macon County, then settling in southwestern Champaign County in 1962 where he would continue raising crops and livestock. He remained a part of the family farm operation there until his death.
