Gerald "Jerry" Clay Flatt, 89, of Tuscola, IL, passed away at 8:00 a.m., Sunday, April 5, 2015 at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana, IL
There will be a social gathering in honor of Jerry at the Tuscola Moose Lodge, 807 East Southline Road, Tuscola from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., on Saturday, April 11, 2015. Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, Tuscola is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Jerry was born on November 27, 1925 in Nason, IL, the son of Bail and Vivian May Roberson Flatt.
Surviving are his son Jerry (Liesel) Flatt of Tuscola, daughter Trudy (Mark) McLaren of Bartonville, sister Virginia Gunter of West Frankfort, 3 grandchildren, grand-dog Hank and many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Jerry was a heavy mortar crewman in the US Army during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and a European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal.
Jerry worked for many years and retired from Jewel Tea Home Delivery Service, during which he received several awards.
He was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge for many years and held several positions during that time. He loved to work in the yard, garden, visit with friends and family and looked forward to his visits from "Hank".
We would like to say a special thank you to Brynn Howard and the other employees of Carle Hospice, the VA and our many friends that helped us with whatever we needed. We hope you all know how truly special you were to him. Until we meet again, enjoy your coffee in the sky.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project.
