Obituary

George Franklin Logsdon, born on September 30, 1927, in Fairhope, Pennsylvania, took his final neighborhood stroll on May 5, 2025, in Foley, Alabama, at the grand age of 97.  The son of Nannie Elizabeth Browning Logsdon and Clyde Edward Logsdon, George grew up with his siblings Harry Edward, Evelyn, Gladys Dietz, Willa Mae Hillegas, and Bobby. His childhood summers on his grandpa's farm taught him the value of hard work, a lesson he carried with a determined spirit and a quiet grit.

On January 4, 1947, in Hutchinson, Kansas, George married his sweetheart, Loretta Mae Wittman (1927-2009), and they built a 62-year love story. After retirement George and Loretta traveled the country (many times with friends) visiting the 48 contiguous states and Canada.  Together, they raised two sons, Mark Steven Logsdon of Huntsville, Alabama, (wife Elaine), and Michael David Logsdon of Foley, Alabama, (wife Melissa). George's family blossomed to include five grandchildren: Aimee Sue Nevitt, Cassandra Iva Logsdon, Andrew Whittington, Alyse Young, and Ashley Vega. He was a proud great-grandfather to Savannah Nevitt, Avanleigh Young, Lincoln Young, Lilah Vega, Noelle Vega, and Rio Vega, with a great-great-granddaughter, Stevie Mae Nevitt-Wantland, and a great-grandson, Jameson Andrew Whittington, both on the way.

A true patriot, George served in the Navy during World War II from December 7, 1944, to July 14, 1946, at the Wichita Naval Air Station and then aboard a Naval Land Craft( LCT) in the Philippines. Determined to help win the war, he tried enlisting at 16 but was sent home, only to triumphantly sign up on his 17th birthday with his parents' blessing. His service earned him the American Theater Ribbon, Pacific Theater Ribbon, and Victory Medal, and he often shared tales of those days with everyone he met. His 78-year membership in the American Legion was a testament to his unwavering patriotism.

Professionally, George was a Foreman for the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America, laying down roots (and pipes) in Great Bend, Kansas, Texarkana, Arkansas and Hammond, Illinois. He was proud that one cold snowy winter storm in Illinois his Hammond station was the only pumping station up and running keeping the gas flowing to Chicago. His community spirit shone brightest in Atwood, Illinois, where he served as a Village Trustee for 22 years (1973-1977, 1981-1998), earning him Keys to the City for both Atwood, Illinois and later in Foley, Alabama. A faithful member of Lake Fork United Church of Christ in Atwood, George lived his faith through action and service to his country and his town.

George's passions were as lively as his stories. George golfed into his 80s, making many friends along the way. His neighborhood walks were legendary, filled with military tales that left neighbors laughing and smiling as if hearing them anew. They mourn his absence but cherish the warmth he brought.

George Franklin Logsdon's legacy is a hole-in-one of devotion, community, and joy. His life reminds us to swing boldly, love fiercely, and walk often.

We want to thank the nurses and doctors at Baldwin Health in Foley and the staff with Gentiva Hospice who provided wonderful care and guidance.

Military and Graveside Services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2025 at the Mackville Cemetery, Atwood, IL with Rev. Mike Drake officiating. A time of fellowship and a meal will be held following the service at the Atwood American Legion Post.
