Obituary

Ernest"Ernie" Bartholomew, Jr., 82, of Arthur, died at 8:04 PM Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at his residence in Arthur.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Arthur United Methodist Church, 128 E. Illinois Street, Arthur, with Rev. John Stewart officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 PM Friday at Shrader Funeral Home, 431 S. Vine Street, Arthur, with Masonic Rites at 8:00 PM. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 PM Saturday at the Washington Street Cemetery in Casey with Military Rites accorded.

Ernie was born August 11, 1932 in Casey, the son of Ernest and Flossie Elliott Bartholomew, Sr. He married Patricia Beth Ulrey in Casey on Sept. 21, 1954.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Beth Bartholomew of Arthur; 2 sons, David (Gemma) Bartholomew of Arthur; Mark (Terrie) Bartholomew of Little Elm, Texas; 2 grandsons, Zachary of Little Elm, Texas, Colten Bartholomew of La Crosse, Wisconsin; step granddaughter, Eleanor McKee-Volkmer of Carleton, Nebraska; several nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Iwana and Burnell Runkel.

Ernie graduated from Casey High School in 1951 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952 until 1956, spending 18 months in Korea during the Korean War.

Ernie and Beth moved to Arthur in 1957. He was employed by Petro/USI Chemical Co. in Tuscola for 35 years, retiring as supervisor in 1992. He was involved in Douglas County politics and government, having been a Bourbon Twp Trustee and Tax Assessor for over 25 years. He just served his second tenure on the Douglas Co. Board, having served from 1992-2000, including 2 years as board chairman. He was reappointed to the County Board in 2011, and elected to a full 4-year term in 2012. He also served on the Douglas co. Sheriff's Dept. Merit Commission, was a director of the Douglas Co. Crime Stoppers, and served as a Republican Precinct Committeeman.

Ernie retired with 20 years of service to the Arthur Volunteer Fire Dept; was a 50-year member of the Arthur VFW and American Legion and was the current commander. He was also a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, Danville Scottish Rite, Ansar Shrine, and founding member of the Tri-Co. Shrine Club, Arthur Lions Club, and Order of the Eastern Star. He belonged to the Arthur United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he served on several committees. Ernie dedicated many years of service to the Moultrie-Douglas Co. Fair, serving as Superintendent of the horse pulling contest and worked on demolition derby and tractor pull. He served as a fair board director from 1984-2000.

Memorials are suggested to the Children's Shriners Hospital in St. Louis; Arthur United Methodist Church; or Arthur Masonic Lodge.
