Obituary

Emerson M. Chapman, 89, of Atwood, IL, passed away at 4:04 p.m., Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood, IL with Dr. Lanny Faulkner officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m., with Masonic Services at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2012 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mackville Cemetery, Atwood, IL with military graveside rites accorded.

Emerson was born on October 1, 1923 in Douglas County, IL, the son of Claud E. and Mildred V. Meeker Chapman. He married Maxine Bishop on July 23, 1942 in Fredericktown, MO. She survives.

Other survivors include his children: Craig E. Chapman and wife: Cheryl of Atwood, IL, Jody McKelvy and husband: Mike of Mt. Vernon, IL, Tony Chapman and wife: Alana of Bolingbrook, IL, grandchildren: Kim Meeks, David Chapman, Erica Casteel, Andy McKelvy, Jordan McKelvy, Peyton Chapman, Jenna Chapman and Kourtney Chapman, 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son: Cary Chapman and sister: Carmelita Bryson.

Memorials are suggested to the Lake Fork United Church of Christ or Atwood-Hammond Christmas Needy Fund.

Emerson worked as a tool and die maker at the Curtis-Wright Airplane factory in St. Louis, MO at the start of World War II. He joined the US Navy in 1942 for two and half years, where he served as 3rd Class Petty officer.

After the war, he farmed and owned the Minneapolis-Moline dealership in Atwood from 1949 to 1961. Emerson was the Atwood Postmaster from 1961 thru 1990. He retired from farming in 1995.

He was a life member of the Atwood Masonic Lodge #651, AF & AM, Ansar Shrine, James Reeder American Legion Post #770 and the Lake Fork United Church of Christ.

He served on the Atwood Village Board and was past president of the Atwood Chamber of Commerce.
Emerson was an avid Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and Fighting Illini fan.
