Duane L. Wetzel, 74, of Mattoon, died at 8:25 AM Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Carle Hospital in Urbana.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 7, 2010 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 2 miles east of Dorans, with Pastor David Bessinger officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Mattoon. Visitation will be held 5:00-8:00 PM Friday at Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N. Locust Street, Arcola. There will also be a visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Duane was born March 1, 1936 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Carl Frederick and Nina Louise Hancock Wetzel. He was united in marriage to Mavis Jane Kenny in Mattoon on March 6, 1959; they celebrated 50 years together. She preceded him in death on December 20, 2009.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Deborah (Jerry) Grim of Milford, Ohio; Marsha (Phillip) Montgomery of Mattoon; 1 son, Kevin Wetzel and friend Pam Raboin of Mattoon; 6 grandchildren, Brian and Laura Grim; Brooke and Wyatt Montgomery; Gage and Haleigh Wetzel; sister, Dara (Ken) Allen of Millstadt; and 2 nephews, David and Mark (Lori)Allen. He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife.

Duane was a former GOP Coles County Chairman; was a private pilot licensee and a member of the Coles County Flying Club. He served in the United States Army and was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Dorans; Mattoon American Legion; Coles County Farm Bureau; Mattoon Golf and Country Club; Stoney Brook Golf and Country Club in Sarasota, Florida. He loved golf, playing cards, and was a St. Louis Cardinal fan.
