Dorcas Lee Slade was granted her angel wings on September 15, 2011. Her final days were spent surrounded by family, even though she was so frail in the end, she gave us all such courage and hope and reminded us of the preciousness of life. Dorcas was born on March 8, 1927 in Deep Water, WV the first child of Mattie Mae and Leonard Manley. She was the wife of the late James R. Slade with whom she had three children, the late Mattie Mae (Susie) Slade Cripe, James Slade and Donald Slade.
Dorcas devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members, she was an active member of the Hammond Missionary Baptist Church and volunteered her time as a member of the library board as well as coordinating the Hammond Community Building, Senior Citizen transportation and various town functions.
Dorcas is survived by: Son, James L. Slade (wife) Sharon; Son, Donald Slade (wife) Kim; Brother, Chuck (wife) Mary Jane of Charleston, WV: Sister in law, Bertie Slade of LaPlace. Dorcas's grandchildren include Amanda Day (husband) Paul and their children, Tyler and Molly; Jennifer Feagin and her children, Jordan, Kyle & Kaden; Vernita Spry and her children Kaci and Stephanie; Katy Hart (husband) DJ and their children Jacob & Lillian; Sarah Foster and her children Caleb, Elizabeth & Alivia and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James R. Slade (husband), Susie Slade Cripe (daughter), Shellie Cripe (granddaughter), June Patterson (sister), Berrie (JR) Slade (brother in law).
Dorcas's countless friends are invited to the visitation at Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood, IL on Sunday, September 18th from 4:00 – 6:00PM and funeral, Monday, September 19th at 11:00AM at the Hammond Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Cerro Gordo Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Dorcas are encouraged to make a donation to the Hammond Missionary Baptist Church.
