Dale R. Hines, 82, of Humboldt, passed away at 9:45 PM Friday, April 2, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N. Locust Street, Arcola, with Rev. Jack Woods officiating. Burial will follow in the Humboldt Cemetery with military rites accorded. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.
Dale was born May 23, 1927 in Dorans, the son of Louis and Mable Ella Hutton Hines. He married Peggy Callahan in Charleston on May 30, 1948.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Peggy Hines of Humboldt.; 1 son, Jay Hines and wife Debra of Mattoon; 2 daughters, Gayle Hall and husband Alan of Humboldt; Kim Brooks and husband Mark of Humboldt; mother-in-law, Dorothy "Doon" Wilkinson of Humboldt; sister-in-law, Janis Vandeveer of Mattoon whom he raised; 5 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dennis; and 2 brothers, Melvin and Edwin.
Dale graduated from Humboldt High School in 1945. He drove a school bus for Mattoon Community Unit #2 from 1948-1967 and then became a certified Charter Tour Bus driver from 1968 until retiring in June, 2000.
Dale was a member of the Humboldt Methodist Church and also the Humboldt American Legion Post #1074 where he served as commander. He served his country during World War II in the United States Navy from May, 1945 until July, 1946. He was stationed in Okinawa and the Philippines during the war and then served in the Naval Reserves until September, 1950.
Dale loved spending time with his family and enjoyed Nascar, Illini basketball, Branson trips, and most of all taking his grandkids on golf cart rides.
