Dale R. Harshbarger, 79, of Decatur, IL, formerly of Atwood, IL, died on Sunday, May 28, 2006 at his home surrounded by his family.
Services celebrating his life will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at the United Church of Atwood, 210 N. Main Street, Atwood, Illinois, with Rev. Veronica Walsh Don officiating. Burial will follow in the Lake Fork Church Cemetery, Rural Atwood, IL, with military graveside rites accorded by the James Reeder American Legion Post #770. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM with an 8:00 P.M. Masonic Service on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 E. U.S. Highway 36, Atwood , Illinois.
Dale was born January 5, 1927 in Douglas County, the son of Herman and Marie Wolford Harshbarger. He married Yvonne Jones on January 7, 1951 in Atwood, Illinois. They were married 55 years and enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, and craft work.
Surviving are his wife, Yvonne, of Decatur; 2 Brothers: Fred (Betty) Harshbarger of Atwood, IL, Carl (Sharon) Harshbarger of Decatur, IL 2 Sisters: Norma (Lawrence) Ingrum of Atwood, IL, Martha (Alvin) Birch of Mt. Zion, IL; many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his Parents.
He was employed at Illinois Power Company, where he worked as an electric meter foreman for 38 years before retiring in 1989. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1945 to 1948.
Dale was a member of the United Church of Atwood. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion, 50-year member of the Atwood Masonic Lodge, AF & AM #651, where he was Past Master, Tri County Shrine Club, Bloomington Consistory, Ansar Shriners of Springfield, and Decatur Shrine Club. He was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for several years and gave over 20 gallons of blood. He was a 50-year member of the Lovington Order of Eastern Star # 869. He was a talented FRET work (scroll saw) artist.
