Obituary
Coach Richard "Dick" Lee Hood, 66, of Belleville, formerly of Arthur, died at 3:45 AM Saturday, June 6, 2009 at St. John's Hospital in St Louis, Missouri.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Shrader Funeral Home, 431 S. Vine Street, Arthur, with Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Burial will follow in the Arthur Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the funeral service on Thursday.
Dick was born January 10, 1943 in Decatur, the son of Joe and Helen Craig Hood. He married Linda Sue Carroll in Bethany on June 17, 1967; she preceded him in death on March 11, 2005.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Paige Waggoner and husband John of Urbana; Brooke Schulze and husband Brett of Indianapolis, Indiana; 2 brothers, his twin Roger Hood and wife Lynda of Lakeland, Florida; Ron Hood and wife Cheryl of Milstadt; and 1 sister, Sandra Miller and husband Bill of Nogal, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 1 sister, Linda Strader, 1 sister-in-law, Ginger Hood and two brother-in-laws, Dan Strader and Charles Guest.
Dick graduated from Arthur High School in 1960 and from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. He taught Industrial Arts and Physical Education and coached at Newman, Lincoln, Vandalia, Rantoul, and Belleville West. He later worked as an assistant coach at McKendree College in Lebanon and at Belleville East. He was inducted into the IHSA Football Hall of Fame, Metro East St. Louis Hall of Fame, and the Arthur Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the "Most Courageous Award" from the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
He had written a book entitled "They Call Me Coach" in order to help young coaches teach the fundamentals of football.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to the Coach Richard Hood Memorial Fund which can be sent to Regions Bank, 4800 West Main St, Belleville, IL, 62226 or Paige Waggoner. These funds will be used to support the athletes of the Belleville East and Belleville West football programs.
