Clayburn Charles Bevis, age 94,of Arthur, passed away May 2, 2018at 2:58 a.m. at the Arthur Home.
Funeral services will held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2018 at First Apostolic Church, 320 Surrey Lane, Arthur with Rev. Jonathan Blake, Sectional Presbyter officiating. Burial will follow in the Arthur Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the funeral at the church. Shrader Funeral Home, 431 S. Vine Street, Arthur, assisted the family with arrangements.
Clayburn was born June 12, 1923 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He was the second son of Glen and Alma (Oathout) Bevis. He married Thara Hale on February 5, 1944 in Bonnie, Illinois. In addition to his bride of 74 years, he is survived by his children, Kyrah Hacker of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Rev. Gawain and wife Yvonne Bevis of Arthur; Rebekah and husband Joel Long of Booneville, Arkansas; and Meleah and husband Robert Smith of Arthur; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
He served in the Army Air Corps in WW II. He was trained as an Electrical Mechanic on B17 bombers in Amarillo,Texas and on B29 bombers at Chanute AFB in Rantoul. He became an instructor of the electrical systems of B17's in Kansas. He was deployed to Guam where he served in the 330 th and 459 th bomber groups as a mechanic on B29 bombers. He was entitled to wear the Asiatic-Pacific, American Theatre, Overseas Service Bar, and Victory Ribbons. He also received the good conduct medal and two bronze stars for meritorious achievement, or service in a combat zone. He received an honorable discharge as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps.
Clay was Secretary of Organization for the Farm Bureau in Crawford and Edgar Counties. He retired after 28 years. He was a director in the Kiwanis Early Riser Club in Paris in 1980. Clayburn was a faithful member of First Apostolic Church of Arthur.
