Christine Mechling, 70, of Champaign, transitioned Wednesday, January 14, 2026 surrounded by friends and family at Willow Breeze in Mattoon.

Christine, mostly known as Chris, was born January 8, 1956, in Urbana, IL. The proud daughter of Constantine “Gus” and Dorothy (Van Ostrand) Chrisagis. Christine graduated early from Central High School and followed in her father’s footsteps at the family restaurant and candy store, Chris’ Candy Shop, in downtown Champaign. If you ever had the chance to visit, it was apparent that it was run by a family with great pride in their food, their service, with a compassionate spirit for all people. Chris married Steve Mechling on April 26, 1975. Shortly after they bought the shop from her father and extended the life of the business to a total of nearly 40 years.

After selling the candy shop in 1989, Chris went on to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University and master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield. Another generation knows her as the bubbly and charismatic woman behind the counter at the Beckman Cafe. She managed the Café for 19 years, just as she managed her restaurant, full of zeal and with a caring heart for all of those who entered. Her love language truly was feeding people. After 20 years at the University, she retired in 2019.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Steve Mechling of Champaign; her cherished daughters, Kate Mechling of Champaign and Leigh Anne Mechling of Pesotum; beloved grandson, Weston Rohl of Pesotum; and her two brothers, Tony (Marla) Chrisagis of Arcola; John (Becky) Chrisagis of Tolono.

Chris enjoyed hosting holidays and special occasions. She loved having coffee and shopping with her friends. She frequently traveled to Florida and a couple of times to the motherland of Greece. She was an active member of the Corvette Club of Illinois and enjoyed driving her corvette around town with the top down. She was a member of Meadowbrook Community Church where she volunteered in the nursery and any other task where she could be useful. She loved to represent Greece at their annual Flag of Nations ceremony. A true candy maker at heart, she continued to make caramel apples, dip chocolates, and shape candy canes at home for many years.

Chris reflected true Christianity. She loved all people without judgement; she selflessly took care of the sick and those in need, and centered her life on God. She was the matriarch of her family and will be deeply missed.

There will be a celebration of her life on January 29th, 2026, at Meadowbrook Community Church in Champaign. Visitation with the family will be from 4 PM – 6 PM, with a service immediately following.

Memorials are suggested to Willow Breeze Hospice House, 10660E Co Rd 800N, Mattoon, IL 61938
