Carroll Dean Brookins, 72, of Tuscola, IL, passed away at 4:40 a.m., Sunday, March 1, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at the Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, 201 East Van Allen Street, Tuscola, IL, with Father Delix Michel officiating.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main Street, Tuscola, IL with a Vigil Service to be held at 4:00 p.m.
Burial with military graveside rites accorded will be held at the Tuscola Township Cemetery.
Carroll was born on December 5, 1942 in Charleston, IL, the son of Jasper and Kathryn Strader Brookins. He married Jacki McCollam on March 15, 1965 in Tuscola, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are their children: John Allen (DeAnn) Brookins of Tuscola, James Eugene (Marcy) Brookins of Savoy, Mary Kathryn (Mark Joseph) Smock of Champaign and Sandra Carol (Lt. Colonel Brian) Alverson of Fischers, IN, grandchildren: Mariah Carol Brookins, Joshuah John Brookins, Marlin Willis Smock, Annabrooke Ray Alverson and Kassie Marie Brookins, brothers: Elmer (Jane) Brookins of Whittington, IL and Freeman (Darlene) Brookins of Charleston, IL, sisters: Janet Warpenburg of Mattoon, IL, and Cleta (Dean) Webster of Charleston, IL, mother-in-law: Mary McCollam Reifsteck, brother-in-law: Lyle "Butch" (Kathy) McCollam of Tuscola and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Carroll retired in 2005 from Kraft Foods in Champaign, where he worked as a cheese and utility operator for 32 years. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Carroll was a member of the Forty Martyrs Catholic Church and Tuscola Moose Lodge. He coached Little League baseball for several years. Carroll loved watching all of his kids and grandkids in all of their many activities. His dog "Jay" will miss him dearly.
