Bernice H. Maier, 88, of Eagle River, Wisconisn, formerly of Arcola, Illinois, passed away at 8:20 AM Monday, August 4, 2014 at Seasons of Life Hospice House in Woodruff, Wisconsin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 9, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Arcola. Burial will follow in the Arcola Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 AM on Saturday at the church with parish rosary at 9:00 AM. Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N. Locust Street, Arcola, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bernice was born February 4, 1926 in Effingham, the daughter of Herman and Bridget Buehnekemper Zehner. She was united in marriage to Sylvester "Francis" Maier on September 9, 1950; her preceded her in death on January 6, 1993.

Survivors include one son, Gary (Linda) Maier of Elmwood, IL; one daughter, Sandra (Bill) Hunt of Conover, Wisconsin; 2 grandchildren, Thomas (Whitney) Maier of Elmwood, IL; Christine (Tom) Kunka of Champaign; 2 great grandchildren, Ian Kunka of Champaign; Quincey Maier of Elmwood; two sisters, Norma (Clarence) Wernsing of Effingham; Mary Lou (Paul) Engle of Melbourne, FL; sisters-in-law, Betty Maier of Arcola; and Helen Fortney of Marietta, GA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John, Bobby, and Harold "Bud" Zehner; two sisters, Sidona Frazier and Margaret Kenter.

Bernice was employed at the Effingham Daily News and in the office of Dr. E.S. Allen, MD, in Arcola. The family was engaged in farming north of Arcola, where she helped in the fields and all aspects of the farming business. She also enjoyed being with family and friends, traveling, camping, fishing, shopping, golfing, reading, bingo, and playing cards.
