Obituary

Benjamin Daniel Helfrich, 22, of Hammond, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2014 at his residence in Charleston, IL.


Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood, IL. with the Rev. Linda Peyla officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hammond Cemetery, Hammond, IL.

Ben was born August 28, 1992 at St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur Illinois and the son of Daniel L. and Mary S. (Behm) Helfrich.

He was a grain handler for ADM Grain in Oakland IL, and an Engineering Technology student at Eastern Illinois University.


Ben was a member of the Hammond United Methodist Church and graduated from Atwood-Hammond High School in 2010. He also attended Mt. Zion Intermediate and Junior High School. Ben loved working and socializing with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed playing with his nephew Christian, talking with his sisters, and building and creating pyrotechnic and mechanical wonders in the backyard with his cousins Dylan and Austin. Ben had a captivating smile, an amazing memory, and a unique sense of humor that made everyone laugh. He was a Boy Scout, a member of FFA, raised chickens as young boy, and truly loved his dog Sam who was a constant companion. He also enjoyed hunting with his Dad, fishing, shooting trap, and an occasional golf game with his Mom, Dad and Grandpa Behm.

Ben is survived by parents, his sisters Mary Katherine Conlin of Windsor and Sarah Grayce Helfrich of Mattoon; nephew, Christian Antony Craig of Sullivan; grandfather, Edward J. Behm of Mattoon; and very special friend Kimberley Poling of Garrett; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was reunited in Heaven with his maternal grandmother, Gail E Behm; paternal grandparents Howard M. and Grayce L. Helfrich; Uncle David P. (Pat) Helfrich, and cousin Edan Orion Behm.

In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to be made to Oakland IL FFA, or Ducks Unlimited.
