Barry J. Berg, long time resident of Atwood, IL, died at the age of 64 in Crossville, TN on April 13, 2012.

Barry was born July 27, 1947 in Tuscola, IL to Melborn Patrick Berg and Estella May Randolph Berg of Atwood.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood, IL. Burial will be in the Mackville Cemetery, Atwood, IL with firefighter rites accorded.

He is survived by his wife: Joyce Berg of Crossville, TN., two step-daughters: Peg, and husband Todd of Tuscola, Dawn, and fiance' Ron of Tolono. Two surviving sisters: Donna Haga and husband John of Perrysville, IN and Margo Thaxton and husband: Larry of Kankakee, IL., special nephew: Andy Haga of Perrysville, IN., and 9 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.

Barry was a very service driven man having given 42 years of volunteer time to the Atwood Fire Department and several years as an EMT within his community. He enjoyed the countless relationships within the fire district with people who may never quite understand what they truly meant to him. He considered many his extended family. He loved to work on the fire engines and share his knowledge with others around him.

Barry retired after 40 years of service from Caterpillar in Decatur, where he was very well versed in big machinery and had a passion for fixing anything they produced. He took great pride in his work.

He was a very quiet, kind, and compassionate gentleman. His greatest love was for his bride of 25 years. They shared a special bond that will never be duplicated. In the last years of his life, they enjoyed retirement together among the mountains, with their special "child" Precious.

Barry loved his grandchildren. He watched Anthony grow into adulthood with pride, created a special bond with Breanna through her adolescence, and found his youngest grandchildren Liam and Harrison to be a great joy in his life.

Barry was a long time member of the Corvette Club of Central Illinois, had endless information on unusual topics, an appreciation for a good joke, and his laugh was priceless. He will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Barry's name to the Atwood Fire Department.
