Alan J. Hettinger, 72, of Tuscola, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL.
Alan was born on December 20, 1952, in Urbana, the youngest of 5 siblings, to George J. Hettinger and Corene M. (Kleiss) Hettinger. The family lived on a farm north of Champaign at the time of his birth and moved to Tuscola in 1955. Alan grew up in Tuscola, graduating from Tuscola High School in 1971. He married Ellen Fjeld on July 24, 1999, in Tuscola. She survives.
He is also survived by his twin daughters, Anna (Mark) Moellering of Argyle, Texas, and Kate (Brian) Moody of Tuscola; four grandchildren: Braxton and Elijah Moody, and Madeline and Elizabeth Moellering; siblings Richard Hettinger of Tolono, Sara Brown of Rantoul, Jerry (Becky) Hettinger of Savoy, and Tom (Renée) Hettinger of Tuscola.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Joseph Brown, and sister-in-law Sandy Hettinger.
He began working with his father at his business, George Hettinger & Sons Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning, after high school and continued operating the business himself after George's retirement.
Alan was a member of Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, serving as usher for many years and always keeping a watchful eye on the boiler in the church. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and Tuscola Moose Lodge #729 and served for over 20 years on the City of Tuscola's Planning & Zoning Commission. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his family and meeting his friends for a Saturday afternoon beer at the local pub.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, September 29, 2025, at Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, 201 East Van Allen Street, Tuscola, IL. Burial will follow in the Tuscola Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main Street, Tuscola, IL.
