Obituary

Douglas R. McCumber, retired community banker, died on Tuesday, September 26, 2017.

A celebration of Doug's life will be held on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Tuscola United Methodist Church, 1701 N. Prairie Avenue, Tuscola, IL. Burial will follow in the Tuscola Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00pm on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main Street, Tuscola, IL.

Doug was born October 13, 1949, in Urbana, Illinois, the son of Kathryn M. Ellis and Raymond R. McCumber. He married Rhonda L. Gensler on July 21, 1979.

Surviving are his wife; son, Matthew McCumber of Martin, Tennessee and daughter, Marissa and her husband Matt Franks of Tuscola, Illinois; mother, Kathryn McCumber of Tuscola; brother, Thom McCumber and his wife Teri of Pasadena, TX; sister, Kathy Glabe and her husband Larry of Columbia, MO, and grandsons Lane, Colt and Clay Franks of Tuscola, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his father.

He was a 1967 graduate of Tuscola High School where he was elected co-captain of the basketball team and was a member of the National Honor Society. In 1971, he graduated with high honors from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Business Administration. He was a "James Scholar" and a member of the Delta Sigma Epsilon professional fraternity. After graduation, Doug served in the Illinois National Guard and then went to work for Continental Illinois National Bank in Chicago. In October, 1972, he joined Tuscola National Bank where he served as Vice President. In February, 1982, he became President and Chairman of the Board of First National Bank of Douglas County which later became First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust. In November, 2000, he joined The First National Bank of Arcola as President & Director and served there until he retired on June 30, 2012.

Doug served as President of the Tuscola Rotary Club, Tuscola Chamber of Commerce and the Tuscola Community Development Corporation. He also was a founding director and served 10 years as Treasurer of the Tuscola Community Foundation. He served as a Little League and Senior Division Baseball coach, Biddy Basketball coach, Girl's Softball coach and was treasurer of the Tuscola Junior Football League. He was known as "the Voice of the Warriors" serving 43 years as the field announcer for the Tuscola Warrior football program. Doug was named Grand Marshal of the 1987 TCHS Homecoming parade. In 2010, he was elected into the TCHS Hall of Fame in recognition of his business achievements.

Doug was a devoted member of the Tuscola United Methodist Church where he participated in bible study and served in various capacities over the years including the Board of Trustees, Capital Stewardship Campaigns and Chairman of the Finance Committee. He was recognized in 1986 as "Tuscolian of the Year", was awarded the "Paul Harris Fellow" by the Tuscola Rotary Club which he was a member for 45 years and was presented the "Community Builder Award" by the Tuscola Masonic Lodge #332. In 1992 and 2009, he was named "Rotarian of the Year". Doug was a lifetime member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association and was honored to be a member of the University of Illinois President's Council and the I Fund's Olympian Club.

Doug was an avid supporter and fan of Illini and Tuscola Warrior sports programs. He was also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan. He loved to spend time with his family, travel, attend sporting events and enjoyed helping others.
